John Sweeny

Artist Bio

Since his early years, John Sweeny, has used color and a variety of art forms to express himself. His natural talent was evident in his early school projects, sketches, drawings and an award-winning water pipe sculpture. His sculpture was displayed at the Everson Museum of Art and somehow turned up missing; it was the 70’s!

In 1978 John’s adventurous soul, a backpack full of dreams and a paint brush left Syracuse, NY on a Triumph Daytona 500 and headed West. He spent time in Texas and California before settling down in Denver, CO. In 1979, he started his custom home painting company Sweeny Painting and Decorating. Across the Denver metro area countless numbers of homes have the Sweeny signature. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Littleton Museum counted on John to give their changing displays the Sweeny touch.

In 2006 his life took a turn and he found himself with a home full of empty walls and space in his heart to fill. Self-taught, John drew strength from his artist heart and soul, love of colors and decorative paint techniques he mastered over the years to express his journey and story on a new canvas.

Painting with oil, acrylic and encaustic while using moderate to heavy textures he draws inspiration from his personal metamorphous and nature to create his one of a kind paintings. John is influenced by abstract expressionism, color experimentation, mixing mediums and use of texture. His goal as an artist is to bring joy to the beholder.
